Waxy Clear Ear Wax Removal

Unfortunately you can no longer get the wax removal procedure service at your GP surgery. As of Septemer 2020 it is has been changed and no longer deemed as an essential service.

No! Cotton buds can be very deceiving as they make you think you are removing wax by the discoloration after being in your ears. However the risk is that it can press wax further into your ear, compacting it and making it hard to remove. This can often lead to temporary hearing loss.

Ear candling has been associated with ear injuries and can cause more harm than good. There is zero evidence that ear candling actually works.

There is always some exceptional circumstances where olive oil may not be recommended however as a general rule we would say yes. If you can use oil 1-2 times per day for 2-3 days prior to the appointment you will help in softening the ear wax to make it easier to clean. Some people stop using olive oil when it results in their hearing getting worse however that is usually a sign of progress. When the wax soaks up the oil it can expand and move around causing a blockage and therefore a temporary hearing loss. However it is a necessary step for preparation before an appointment.

It is not recommended as there can be some risks. The risks are causing damage to the ear drum/canal or making blockages impacted and harder to remove. We recommend that you see a qualified experienced healthcare professional for removing ear wax. They will be able to analyse your outer ear, canal and wax to determine the best and safest method for removal.
